The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is a political party in Sri Lanka that was formally established in 2016. It emerged after the 2015 general election, during a period of transition in national politics, and was closely associated with figures from the Rajapaksa family, particularly Basil Rajapaksa and Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In its early years, the party focused on building a broad grassroots base and consolidating support among voters who identified with the Rajapaksa political network. Its symbol, the “Pohottuwa” or flower bud, became one of the party’s most recognizable identifiers and was widely used in its election campaigns and political messaging.
The SLPP achieved a major breakthrough in the 2018 local government elections, where it secured a strong nationwide performance and established itself as a leading political force. That momentum continued in 2019, when Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the presidential election as the party’s candidate, followed by a decisive parliamentary victory in 2020 that enabled a government led by Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister.
During its period in government, the SLPP promoted policies centered on infrastructure, development, and administrative coordination. The party’s position later weakened during the 2022 economic crisis, which triggered public unrest and led to the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The crisis marked a turning point in the party’s trajectory and reshaped the wider political environment.
Since then, the SLPP has remained active in Sri Lankan politics while attempting to reorganize its public image and political direction. Its recent electoral performance has reflected a reduced level of support compared with its peak years, but the party continues to retain a visible role in the country’s political discourse.
